‘We’re just happy to be alive’: Wisconsin family loses everything in historic flooding

MILWAUKEE — Ten minutes — that’s how much time Tony Soto and his fiancé Alyssa Feavel had to pack up their belongings and evacuate during the historic flooding a month ago.

“I told her, ‘We got to get out because all of this water is flowing through,’” said Soto. “Just in seconds, it’s just coming up to our knees.”

Just after midnight on Aug. 10, their lower-level apartment on the south side of Milwaukee began to fill up with water.

“I’m helping him find the keys,” said Feavel. “The table comes over and floats over with the keys on it. We get the keys. The water is almost up to my hips, and he has to jump across the fridge to get the cat that was in the bathroom that was basically drowning in the water.”…
