Prosecutor Haynes’ strategy: Blame the boss

Facing multiple felony charges that he engaged in a bribery scheme, Assistant District Attorney Gary Haynes revealed some of his strategy in federal court on Monday — blaming his boss, District Attorney Don Landry, the only witness to testify on the opening day of trial.

Haynes also plans to make the case to the jury that he himself was victimized by his alleged co-conspirators, the opening arguments by his defense showed.

Todd Clemons, Haynes’ attorney, told jurors Haynes did not accept kickbacks. Rather, Clemons said, Haynes was taken for a ride by Lafayette businessman Leonard Franques to the tune of $219,000 and Dusty Guidry, the consultant Landry hired to assist Haynes with the pretrial diversion program…
