Can a child be a field trip?

For Marshall L. Davis Sr., managing director of the Marshall L. Davis Sr. African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, that exact approach is helping children learn about themselves.

“Rather than just taking a field trip to go see someone else, they become the field trip, so people come to see them and applaud them,” Davis said. “That gives them a sense of accomplishment and confidence.”

The 50th anniversary of the cultural arts center will be celebrated Sept. 14 at the Adrienne Arsht Center with performances by the Nu Deco Ensemble, Broadway dancer Marshall Davis Jr. and jazz musician Willerm Delisfort, as well as a dance choreographed by Robert Battle.
