GREEN BAY (WLUK) – An Aug. 3, 2026, trial date was scheduled Thursday in the federal wrongful death civil rights lawsuit filed against Wisconsin corrections officials by the family of Green Bay Correctional Institution inmate Micah Laureano, who was killed by his cellmate.
Laureano was strangled by Jackson Vogel on Aug. 27, 2024. Vogel was convicted in June of the murder and hate crime for targeting Laureano due to his race and sexual orientation, and is serving a life prison term with no chance at parole.
After Laureano’s murder, his mother, Phyllis, filed a federal civil rights wrongful death lawsuit, claiming Department of Corrections Sec. Jared Hoy and GBCI Warden Christopher Stevens were responsible for her son’s death. State officials have denied any wrong doing.
