Los Lunas library employee creates Valencia County community cookbook

VALENCIA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – In an effort to bring the community together, A Los Lunas Public Library employee is gathering family recipes to include in the Valencia County Cookbook.

“During this time, it’s a little crazy, people are kind of against each other, so I felt like it would be a good way to bring our community together with a cookbook because I feel like most people love food,” said 21-year-old Tommy Madrid III, a library technician at the Los Lunas Public Library.

Madrid came up with the idea for a cookbook in 2024 and started accepting recipes in 2025. On Sept. 1, the first edition of the cookbook called “Valencia County Cooking” was released at libraries in Valencia County.

“We have a lot of desserts with this, a lot of New Mexican dishes, and surprisingly, we have a few German dishes, which surprised me quite a bit,” Madrid said, explaining that the first edition has 10 recipes in total…
