Only firefighters will be allowed to ascend the stairs, but family, friends and supporters are welcome to gather and watch them make the climb. The firefighters will begin climbing at 8:46 a.m., the same time the first plane hit the first World Trade Center tower in New York. The stair climb will be held at the WaFd building in downtown Albuquerque.

Following the climb, the city will hold a memorial ceremony at Civic Plaza. The ceremony includes final honors for the lives lost in the attacks, including a 21 gun salute, bagpipes and more. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., but could change based on when the stair climb is completed…
