If you were passing through a stretch of North Walters Street on the East Side in recent years, there’s a good chance you encountered Tamara Jones.
Jones was a steady presence along a stretch of sidewalk she called home. For more than 10 years, she lived between Burnet and Poinsetta streets, behind Walters Food Mart. Motorists and passersby grew used to seeing her, no matter how hot or cold the weather.
Jones’ daughter, Marquesha Freemon, says she tried repeatedly to help get her mother off the street and into housing. Other family members, members of the nearby Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and the city of San Antonio’s Homeless Outreach team also tried to convince Jones to seek shelter without success…
