Metro Health advises schools on handling rise in hand, foot, and mouth disease cases

SAN ANTONIO — Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common illness among children under 5 years old, but it can affect anyone, according to Metro Health’s Deputy Director.

While the disease is usually not serious, it is highly contagious. In Texas, HFMD is not routinely reported to public health authorities unless there is an unusual number of cases.
