Jefferson County man convicted on bank fraud charges

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Jefferson County man was convicted for his role in a conspiracy to obtain and deposit stolen checks, U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona announced Friday.

Deizman Ellis, 24, of McCalla, was convicted of all five charges he faced, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, possession of stolen mail, and fraudulent use of unauthorized access devices.

Ellis was a participant in a large-scale stolen check cashing scheme between Aug. 2023 and Feb. 2024, according to Escalona.. During the scheme, business and personal checks were stolen from postal boxes in the Tuscaloosa area, using stolen postal keys that were used to open the boxes. Ellis and others then deposited the stolen checks into co-conspirators’ bank accounts and withdrew cash from those accounts.
