SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Chacoan peccary twins have been born at the Dickerson Park Zoo (DPZ). Peccaries were originally thought to be extinct, and the Zoo says the birth of these twins is a significant step in preserving the species.
The peccaries were bred at DPZ through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan. The birth of the twins showcases the teamwork of DPZ and AZA.
“Chacoan peccaries are a fairly secretive species. There isn’t a ton known about their breeding process,” said zookeeper Grayson Stem. “We came into the best surprise with the arrival of two babies.”…
