ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – How can the City of Albuquerque use artificial intelligence to its benefit while also keeping ethics and safety in mind? Albuquerque city councilors tasked a working group to look into just that. “We’re actually one of the top ten digital cities in the nation,” said Mark Leech, Director of the city’s Department of Technology and Innovation. “It allowed us to kind of, like, clarify our thinking a little bit, then also position the city of Albuquerque as a leader in AI policy across the country.”

Leech helped lead the working group made up of a diverse group of people, including city staffers, community members, and tech experts. “As much as anything, what we’re trying to do is protect the city, protect our residents, but also we’re trying to see how we can use AI for good as well and as an opportunity for innovation,” said Leech.
After nine months, the group has its recommendations for the city, including creating a code of ethics for both those who implement the AI system and the staff who use it. “What we want to do is make sure everyone’s got a clear and unambiguous guidance as to what AI is, how to use it, what the strengths are and what the limitations are,” said Leech…
