Historic Sioux Falls grocery, now restaurant, nominated

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — A building in Sioux Falls that served the Cathedral Historic District as a grocery store for more than four decades and now is a breakfast and lunch spot called the Perch Historical Kitchen will be considered for the National Register of Historic Places.

The South Dakota State Historical Society trustees voted on Friday to nominate what’s known locally as the Effting building.

The two-story brick structure was built in 1908 as a store at the corner of Grange Avenue and W. 9th Street. It sits across from the site of the old Lincoln Elementary School that has since been demolished and turned into a city park.

The building takes its name from the original owners, Peter and Catherine Effting, and their daughter, Myrtle. The family lived on the second floor and Catherine and then Myrtle ran the store from 1908 to 1934…
