Portland student’s eviction dropped after readers step in where county, state have pulled back

A landlord’s lawyer asked a judge Thursday to dismiss an eviction case against a Portland State University student whom The Oregonian/OregonLive featured in an article about a day in the state’s busiest eviction court.

The July 30 story prompted donations from several readers who wanted to help Ahmeah Brown. Together with money she’d saved, the donations allowed Brown to cover her past-due rent of $1,988 plus a security deposit and first month’s rent at a new place. Brown said her food service shifts at Moda Center have picked back up and she’s now confident she can stay on top of her $850 rent payment.

“When I was going through that situation, I thought it was the end for me,” Brown said Thursday. “But I guess it isn’t the end and you can pull yourself out of debt like that. Obviously, I got help. I don’t think I would have been able to pay off that debt just working my job.”…
