MESA, Ariz. — It’s the time of year when a rare phenomenon may be seen stretched out across the Superstition Mountains.
The so-called “Cougar Shadow” occurs twice a year when the sun is angled in a specific position to generate a unique shadow resembling a crouching mountain lion. The shadow typically appears in March and September on the western face of the mountain range.
Visit Mesa said the week of Sept. 14 is expected to be the best time to witness the cougar’s appearance on the mountains. The prime time to see the shadow is around 6 p.m., which is about 30 minutes before sunset…
