Free Book Bus brightens neighborhoods around the Charlottesville area

To the untrained eye, the Free Book Bus looks like any other yellow school bus, but the children at the Riverside Avenue apartments in Charlottesville know better.

Every week, the bus — a repurposed school bus decorated with rainbow curtains, a glittery disco ball, lots of plush toys and, of course, book-lined walls — stops at housing complexes, schools, food pantries, shelters and events in Albemarle and Nelson counties to give away books and hygiene products.

As Sharon Stone parked for her regularly scheduled stop, a cluster of girls started flagging her down from their lawn. With bare feet and a kitten in tow, they raced towards her, clearly worried they had missed the bus…
