The Surfside Beach community gathers for 9/11 Stair Climb

The Surfside Beach community gathered around the Surfside Fishing Pier’s staircase at 8 a.m to join the fire department and police department in the annual 9/11 Stair Climb on Thursday, Sept. 11.

Over 100 people arrived at the pier to ascend 2,200 steps — 26 times up and down the pier’s stairs — in recognition of the climb completed by first responders at the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

About 3,000 Americans, including 343 New York firefighters, lost their lives on 9/11. Terrorists hijacked four airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center towers, which collapsed; the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field when the passengers of Flight 93 fought back…
