Teachers union calls for school officials to cancel business during hotel workers’ strike

A state teachers union is calling for the Texas Association of School Boards and Texas Association of School Administrators to cancel all events at the Hilton Americas-Houston because of the ongoing strike.

Unite Here Local 23, representing about 400 of the hotel’s hourly and tipped workers, launched a strike on Labor Day as members demand a $23-an-hour minimum wage. The group posted a Sept. 10 letter from Texas AFT’s president, Zeph Capo, addressed to Texas Association of School Boards’ president, Rolinda Schmidt.

A spokesperson for the Texas Association of School Boards said Thursday that the associations received information that the strike, initially scheduled to end Sept. 10, would finish by the conference’s start and noted that cancelation would bring “significant financial loss” to the nonprofit associations. The group commented it hopes for “an end to the labor dispute that prioritizes a fair resolution with workers.”…
