This Saturday, Sept. 13, Pikes Peak, also known as America’s Mountain, will be abuzz with the joys of fishing as the third annual Youth Fishing Derby takes place at Crystal Creek Reservoir. The event, which promises to be a delightful experience regardless of the weather, is set to reel in a crowd from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The Youth Fishing Derby is priming itself to be a perfect catch for the community. Open to kids aged 6 to 15, this free event, presented by America’s Mountain in partnership with Colorado Springs Utilities and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, allows young fishers to cast their lines without the need for a fishing license. As a bonus to the early birds, the first 100 registered participants will receive free fishing gear. Colorado Springs details that a hands-on demonstration will cover “essential skills such as casting, knot tying, baiting, and handling fish safely” before the children set out to fish.
As youngsters vie for the biggest catch or the most fish, the derby isn’t just about the haul; it’s about cultivating the next generation of fishing enthusiasts.
