JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson culinary staple was recently declared among the best restaurants in America.
The New York Times sent 14 reporters and editors to eat 200 meals across 33 states. It cared about a focus on not just the food but the dining experience. As a result, the Mayflower Cafe took the title as one of the best 50 restaurants in America.
The Mayflower Cafe first started as a hamburger stand but transformed into one of Jackson’s oldest and most storied restaurants. Greek immigrants started the eatery dubbed “Mississippi’s Original Seafood House” back in 1935. After the family-owned restaurant announced that it would be closing its doors, Jackson chefs Hunter Evans and Cody McCain purchased it in 2024.
