Widespread Panic retook their throne onstage at Allianz Amphitheatre at Riverfront in Richmond, Virginia for the second consecutive night. Like the night prior, the juggernauts of jam rock and roll kept the music flowing, often uninterrupted, leaning into their new material while still serving up a selection of Bloodkin, Jimmy Cliff, Talking Heads, and Tom Petty covers.
Firing out of the gate, Panic started the show with the opening track of 2024’s Snake Oil King, “Little by Little”. The only cover of the set, Bloodkin’s “Who Do You Belong to?” maintained a lively tempo before descending into “Rock”. Sunny Ortiz’s percussion and John Bell’s slide guitar gave the song its characteristic flair.
Possibly indicative of a theme, a few of the following songs mentioned dogs and cats. “Steven’s Cat” segued into a “Driving Song” sandwich (“Bowl for the cat / bowl for the dog”). Halfway through, Panic swerved into “Blue Carousel” from 2024’s Hailbound Queen before changing gears to finish the sandwich…
