Chicago will install 50 new speed cameras in 2025 as part of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s budget plan. The cameras will be placed in phases throughout the year, primarily in “Safety Zones” near schools and parks.
City officials say the initiative is intended to improve traffic safety in areas where children and families are present. At the same time, revenue from the cameras will help cover an $11 million gap in the Chicago Police Department’s staffing budget.
Each new camera will include a 30-day warning period before issuing fines. After that, drivers caught going 6 to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit will receive a $35 ticket, while those exceeding the limit by 11 miles per hour or more will face a $100 fine.
