Homeless man hides cocaine in backseat of deputy’s patrol vehicle

A homeless man in Leesburg who was arrested on a drug-related warrant received more charges for cocaine he hid in a deputy’s patrol vehicle.

Deputies were looking for someone involved in a hit-and-run when they noticed 38-year-old David Austin Williams standing in the tree line on Northen Avenue in Leesburg at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. He was hiding behind shrubbery trying to conceal himself.

A deputy confronted him, and he stated he did not have a driver’s license. Due to him not being the suspect, he left the scene. The deputy then ran his name through dispatch and learned he had an active Lake County warrant for violation of probation for possession of methamphetamine, the report said.

A search of the area led to the deputy finding Williams at Western and Center Avenues, after which he was handcuffed and put in the back of a patrol car. While taking him to jail, the deputy saw he was making unusual movements in the backseat. He was later taken out of the car with a needle and tin foil in his left hand, the report said…
