Man shot, killed by Homewood police identified

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — The man who was shot and killed by a Homewood police officer last week was identified Monday.

The shooting took place on Greensprings Highway near Valley Avenue on Sept. 12 around 10:01 a.m. According to the Homewood Police Department, officers located a man, now identified as 53-year-old James Terryl Daniels, on a bicycle obstructing traffic. Officers made contact with Daniels, who said he did not want to identify himself because he had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest, and he had been in prison for robbery.

Police were eventually able to confirm Daniels identity and the warrant for his arrest. When police attempted to detain Daniels he allegedly became uncooperative and moved into lanes of oncoming traffic. Homewood police said he then reached under his shirt, pulled out a pistol, chambered a round, and pointed the gun at officers. At this point, officers shot Daniels and removed the pistol from him.
