Prison Employee Arrested For Trying To Smuggle Grillz Into South Carolina Facility

A South Carolina prison employee has been arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle teeth jewelry—better known as grillz—into a correctional facility.

The Arrest

According to WISTV, 36-year-old Sharon Elizabeth Smith, a canteen manager at Lee Correctional Institution in Columbia, was taken into custody on September 10. Authorities say she conspired with others to sneak grillz into the prison. Officers searched her vehicle and reportedly found $2,500 worth of grillz inside.

Smith has been charged with criminal conspiracy and was immediately terminated from her position at Lee Correctional Institution. The South Carolina Department of Corrections confirmed she no longer works at the facility.
