RADIO IOWA NEWS BRIEF: Ed Board Rules On Appeal Involving New Curriculum Law

The State Board of Education ruled against the appeal of a Dallas Center-Grimes parent in a test of the new law banning critical race theory and social justice from school curriculum. Shelly Flockhart asked for a review of songs, poems, videos, articles and book excerpts used by an English teacher as supplemental teaching material. She says only reviewing the textbooks in the curriculum circumvents the law, but the attorney for the school says the district followed what the law requires.

According to Radio Iowa, State Board of Education member Brian Kane told Flockhart she made some good points, but says he believes that the process was followed according to the code. Board member Todd Abrahamson says he understands the arguments, but says lawmakers need to review the bill again, because the word balance isn’t in it and it creates gray areas…
