Editorial: Federal help can improve public safety in New Orleans — but only if it’s real

The city of New Orleans has a long and fruitful history of working closely with other agencies to combat crime.

Joint task forces with federal agencies such as the FBI and DEA, cooperative endeavors with neighboring jurisdictions and the Troop Nola partnership with Louisiana State Police have bolstered local efforts. Louisiana National Guard troops have been welcome during special events or following crises such as the terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.

But when it comes to the prospect of hastily sending federalized National Guard troops into New Orleans, we have serious concerns…
