McConnell Air Force Base commemorates POW/MIA week

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita is marking POW/MIA Week with events through Friday.

Up until 1979, there were no days set aside each year specifically dedicated to United States Prisoners of War or those Missing In Action. Eventually, the third Friday of September was officially designated as POW/MIA Day.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held Monday morning at the flagpole outside Building One at McConnell. Starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, airmen at McConnell will walk or run with the flags in a 24-hour vigil to honor POW/MIA servicemembers, ending at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
