SALEM, Ore. – Monday afternoon in Salem, Governor Tina Kotek signed three new consumer protection bills into law, celebrating a legislative push to make everyday financial transactions fairer and more transparent for Oregon families.
Joined by lawmakers, consumer advocates, and community leaders, Governor Kotek highlighted the significance of the new laws, which target medical debt, hidden online fees, and unfair car-buying practices.
What the Bills Do:
- Senate Bill 605 bans medical debt from appearing on credit reports.
- Senate Bill 430 requires online sellers to include all mandatory fees upfront.
- House Bill 3178 ensures car buyers receive clear, plain-language loan disclosures in Oregon’s top six spoken languages.
At the signing, Governor Kotek said:
“What we have in front of us today are bills that say, ‘we are going to focus on fairness here in the state, and we’re going to do what we can to protect people so they have the predictability in their lives to make the choices they need to make,’ because no one who’s trying to just do the basics should be dealing with these types of barriers.”
All three laws will go into effect starting January 2026…
