Reidsville woman wins insurance battle after wheelchair dispute

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Spend a few minutes with Gloria Gosling and it’s clear she lives by one motto: “The only disability in life is a bad attitude.”

Gosling, who can no longer walk because of fragile knees and kidney failure that requires dialysis three times a week, was told she needed a motorized wheelchair. But getting one turned into a yearlong fight with her hospital and insurance company.

She says hospital staff asked for her credit card information to process the chair, promising she could later seek reimbursement from her insurance provider. When she tried to file, she learned the hospital had listed the wheelchair as “private pay,” meaning no medical codes were submitted for coverage…
