North Carolina officer killed while riding bike was once a High Point University athlete

CORNELIUS, N.C. — The High Point University community is mourning the loss of Gabriel Stainback, a former track and field standout who went on to serve as a Cornelius police officer. Stainback, 26, was killed Saturday, Sept. 13, when a vehicle struck him while he was riding his bike with his wife in Concord.

Stainback graduated from High Point in 2021, where he was a three-time Big South Decathlon Champion and helped lead the Panthers to their first-ever Big South Outdoor Championship title. He was remembered by coaches as a bright light and an all-around great teammate.

“Gabe was such an amazing young man who came from an amazing family,” said Head Coach Mike Esposito. “He was one of our all-time favorite student-athletes and he is going to be missed dearly.”…
