VP Walz Wants Third Term as Governor

St. Paul, MN – Governor Tim Walz announced his bid for a third term on Tuesday, setting the stage for a potentially historic gubernatorial race in 2026.

Walz, who served as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 presidential election, shared his decision in a campaign video posted online. He emphasized his commitment to Minnesota, stating his work isn’t finished and he wants to ensure opportunity for all residents.

Walz’s announcement comes after a tumultuous year marked by personal tragedy and political controversy. The assassination of his close ally, former House Speaker Melissa Hortman, and a deadly shooting at a Minneapolis church deeply impacted the Governor and the state. His 2024 vice presidential campaign brought him national attention, highlighting his “Midwest Dad” image while also drawing scrutiny to his record, including a controversial comparison of ICE agents under the Trump administration to the Gestapo.

The Governor’s decision to seek re-election follows earlier statements ruling out a run for the US Senate seat vacated by Tina Smith. He expressed a stronger interest in remaining Governor, even before the recent tragedies.

While Walz secured comfortable victories in his previous gubernatorial races, winning by over 11 points in 2018 and nearly 8 points in 2022, he faces a significant challenge. No Minnesota governor has won a third consecutive term since the shift to four-year terms in 1963. Furthermore, although Minnesota has historically leaned Democratic, Republicans have made gains in recent years, creating a more competitive political landscape.

Several Republican candidates have already emerged, including former business executive and Army veteran Kendall Qualls, who is hoping to become Minnesota’s first Black governor, former state Senator Scott Jensen, and State Representative Kristin Robbins. The 2026 gubernatorial race promises to be a closely watched contest.
