WMU celebrates topping off new dorm building

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Construction at a new residence hall is one more step closer to being complete at Western Michigan University.

Staff, students and the community were invited to sign a structural panel used to cap off the new hall, called Golden Oaks.

Campus staff say the 270,000-square-foot building will house more than a thousand first-year students in the valley neighborhood.

“We believe that Golden Oaks is going to be one of those transformative experiences. Students are going to move into a brand-new space that not only has air conditioning, which is always exciting, but has a lot of natural light, has natural wood all around you. You’ve got your sense of privacy, but you also have all of that community built in around you,” said Barry Olson, associate vice president of Campus Life and Student Affairs…
