JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A powerful conversation took place in Jackson on Tuesday, as Mississippians came together to confront the stigma surrounding suicide.
The Mississippi Department of Mental Health (MDMH) hosted its 9th Annual Suicide Prevention Symposium. The event brought together community members, mental health professionals and advocates from across the state.

The theme, “Changing the Narrative by Sharing Our Stories,” encourages people impacted by suicide to speak out. Organizers said by opening up, individuals can help break the silence and show others they’re not alone.
“When you talk to someone who had thoughts of suicide, they will tell you many times they felt hopeless. They felt that no one understood what they were going through, or they felt that no one cared.
