Town of Colonie EMS paramedic comes home to hero’s welcome after being slashed in Germany

Knife attack was while saving woman on train in Germany from assault

COLONIE – 21-year-old Colonie resident and EMS squad member John Rudat returned home to a hero’s welcome on Tuesday, Sept. 2, after he suffered serious injury helping a fellow passenger who was being assaulted on a train in Germany, where he was traveling.

Town of Colonie EMS Chief Erin Kelly said her department likes to show support to any member going through a difficult experience. “We thought it was important to welcome John home,” she said.

“I would do it again in a heartbeat because that’s what I would want someone to do for me, my loved ones, or a stranger,” said Rudat, a paramedic by training. As a paramedic, he said, “You treat strangers like they’re family.”…
