SUN: Baltimore City Council to probe broken elevators, security concerns in senior housing

BALTIMORE, MD (WBFF) — Members of the Baltimore City Council want to examine complaints about residential housing for older adults, ranging from security concerns to non-working elevators.

The new Council resolution follows recent reporting by The Baltimore Sun on poor conditions at Penn North Plaza, a subsidized apartment building for seniors located at the corner of Pennsylvania and West North avenues. Sources described rampant drug dealing and drug use at the building, with drug deals occurring both outside and inside, along with a lack of security. The building has racked up numerous citations and violations over the past year for maintenance problems and lack of a rental license.

The resolution was introduced this week by Council Member Odette Ramos and calls for an informational hearing on the conditions of older adult buildings across the city. The Council is inviting the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City and the Mayor’s Office of Older Adults Affairs and Advocacy to participate.
