NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Charles P. Murray Middle School in New Hanover County is one of eight schools named Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools by Special Olympics North Carolina, which comes with special recognition.
The eight schools will each receive what’s called national banner recognition from the organization, in the form of a banner to hang in the school that recognizes the school community’s “..efforts to provide inclusive sports and activities for students with and without disabilities for the 2024-25 school year”, according to a release from SONC.
Along with Murray Middle School, the list of schools receiving the banner recognition for the 2024-25 academic year include:
- Beverly Woods Elementary School, Mecklenburg County
- Bunn Middle School, Franklin County
- Cramerton Middle School, Gaston County
- Duke University, Durham County
- Francis Bradley Middle School, Mecklenburg County
- Idlewild Elementary, Mecklenburg County
- Swansboro High School, Onslow County
According to the news release, schools receive the recognition “..as a result of meeting 10 national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy and respect. These standards were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community”…
