Madison police induct newest horse to Mounted Patrol Unit

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police Department has a new equine member.

Spirit earned his badge Tuesday afternoon during a ceremony near the fieldhouse at Vel Phillips Memorial High School, joining MPD’s Mounted Patrol Unit.

The 6-year-old ebony-colored purebred Percheron Gelding was joined by the high school’s cheer team and MFD. The timeless tradition is the last step before becoming a full-fledged member of the city, according to police. Spirit’s name holds a special place in Laura Harrington’s heart, his sponsor…
