Tulare man arrested after wild chase and crash on Highway 99; 11 pounds of pot found

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — A 23-year-old man from Tulare was arrested early Wednesday morning after a dramatic series of events that included evading police, crashing his car, and running across Highway 99 in McFarland before he was tased and apprehended.

The McFarland Police Department responded to a call at approximately 7:41 a.m. on September 17, 2025, about a man passed out in his vehicle at the Velox gas station, located at 201 West Perkins Avenue. Officers identified the man as Giovanni Capozzi. Upon waking, Capozzi immediately drove off, initiating a police pursuit.

During the chase, Capozzi overturned his vehicle on the northbound onramp of Perkins Avenue at Highway 99. He then fled on foot across the highway, which had moderate traffic at the time. Officers cornered him near the intersection of Perkins Avenue and Frontage Road, but Capozzi attempted to hide in thick brush before running across the highway again…
