BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Texas man was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for conspiring to kidnap a toddler, according to U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona on Wednesday.
Steven Holguin, 42, of El Paso, was sentenced to 210 months in prison followed by a life term of supervised release. Holguin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit kidnapping in April.
A Birmingham police officer responded to a call regarding the kidnapping of a three-year-old girl on November 4, 2021, according to the plea agreement. Holguin and the child’s uncle, Elis Salgado-Galindo, kidnapped the child with the intent of taking her to her father, who lives in Honduras. With Holguin’s assistance, Salgado-Galindo grabbed the child and left the residence.

An Amber Alert was issued along the Alabama-Mississippi state line. The Rankin County Sheriff’s Officer issued a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched the description of Holguin’s vehicle. Holguin, who was the driver, was instructed to exit the vehicle. The other individuals, along with the toddler, were removed.
