Garage Sale Find Turns into $10,000 Treasure

Talk about a lucky find! An “Antiques Roadshow” guest was stunned to learn that three posters he picked up at a garage sale for a mere 75 cents were worth a whopping $10,000.

The guest, who had a hunch he’d stumbled upon something historically significant, brought the trio of worn and slightly nibbled-on posters to the show. He explained to appraiser Nicholas Lowry that he purchased them for 25 cents apiece, recognizing their historical value even then.

Lowry confirmed the posters’ connection to the Civil Rights movement, identifying them as the work of renowned photographer Danny Lyon. Lyon, known for his social documentary photography, captured powerful images of the era, including work with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Lowry pointed out one poster featuring Congressman John Lewis, a key figure in the fight for voting rights.

After a detailed examination, Lowry delivered the jaw-dropping appraisal: $7,000 to $10,000 for the set. The guest, understandably “flabbergasted,” admitted his history knowledge clearly outweighed his math skills, acknowledging the incredible return on his 75-cent investment.
