CINCINNATI (WKRC) — New blood pressure guidelines released by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology could significantly reduce health risks, according to local cardiologists.
TriHealth cardiologist Dr. Konstantin German emphasized the importance of these guidelines, which are based on breakthrough information about blood pressure and its impact on long-term health.
“I think for a while we’ve known a lot of the benefits of blood pressure control typically for 130 of the systolic and 90 for the diastolic,” said Dr. German. “What I think the new guidelines emphasize are a few things. You know there’s a lot more benefit to protecting blood pressure than previously thought. We’ve known for a while about the benefits of preventing kidney disease, heart attacks, strokes, peripheral artery disease, but now there is even a lot of data showing that there are other benefits too, meaning that we can really ward off things like dementia and cognitive decline as we get older.”…
