Temporary fix” or real solution? Inside Corpus Christi’s emergency wells

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi city leaders say our water system is now getting 7 million gallons a day of well water that’s being dumped directly into the Nueces River and then sent into the O.N. Stevens water plant. Eventually that amount is expected to soar to some 30 mgd.

City Councilwoman Carolyn Vaughn, City Manager Peter Zanoni, and the city’s water team toured two drilling sites west of Calallen on Tuesday.

Interim Chief Operating Officer Nick Winkelmann says the west-side wells are projected to pump more than 17 million gallons a day. That’s in addition to the first well field near the Nueces River, already producing 11 million gallons daily…
