School is now a few weeks in, and I’m sure your kids have already had homework to do. But nowadays, not only does homework start earlier with elementary school-aged kids bringing home assignments… subjects like math aren’t taught the way they used to in school. Next thing you know, you’re googling ways to learn or watching a YouTube video for help. Nevertheless, research has shown that children are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework, as it demonstrates to them that their efforts are valued. Experts say it’s not so much about you mastering the coursework, it’s more about supporting them. So, here are 6 tips to help your child when it comes to homework:

  • Set up a consistent homework routine that includes a set time and place
  • Create a dedicated study area that’s quiet and well-lit so your child can focus on their work
  • Keep distractions to a minimum; TV is off, and the phone is put away
  • Keep up-to-date on the curriculum and teaching methods so you can assist your child with how the teacher wants it done
  • While helping, avoid giving away the answers and instead, try your best to guide them through it
  • Provide positive reinforcement
