Madison leaders narrowly reject push to save homeless encampment site

Nearly two dozen people experiencing homelessness and residing at the Dairy Drive encampment site on Madison’s east side have until the end of the month to find somewhere else to be.

After hours of public comment and debate, Madison’s City Council members voted early Wednesday morning to end the city’s extended contract with Madison Street Medicine, the nonprofit organization that has operated the Dairy Drive site for the past four years.

Case managers and staff can continue helping people coordinate housing until the end of October, but city officials expect the 29 shelters at 3202 Dairy Drive to be vacated by Sept. 26…
