Mike Sutter review: Even at 750 feet, Hemisfair tower restaurant’s a letdown

Before you ask: Yes, I’ve seen the new “Final Destination” movie. There’s a tower in it, a tower not that different from San Antonio’s Tower of the Americas. That particular horror franchise being what it is, bad things happen in that tower. I won’t spoil it, but beware that old “Animal House” song and any kid with a penny.

They’ve seen it, too, a couple of the people I spoke to at Chart House, the restaurant spinning around at the top of the Hemisfair tower. I wasn’t the first one to ask that question, they said. And I won’t be the last, not for a long time.

It would be a convenient narrative device for a review of Chart House, to build the story around a disaster theme, building on the dismissive tourist-trap reputation that haunts any restaurant purpose-built for a 750-foot carousel ride in the clouds.
