Central Alabama nursing home closing, causing residents to be relocated and over 100 employees to lose their jobs

GARDENDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — A nursing home in Gardendale is closing after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services terminated its Medicaid and Medicare benefits, causing residents to find a new home somewhere else and over 100 employees to lose their jobs.

In a WARN notice posted this week on the Alabama Department of Commerce’s website, Magnolia Center will be closing its doors, resulting in 103 employees being let go. The home is owned by Genesis HealthCare, who previously filed for bankruptcy back in July.

On Sept. 4, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid determined that the nursing home had “failed to substantially comply with Medicare and Medicaid health and safety participation services” and would cut the agreement between Medicaid and the home by Sept. 15…
