Most MidAmerican power outages fixed after thunderstorms hit downtown Des Moines

A round of heavy thunderstorms across Iowa has left thousands of MidAmerican Energy customers in the Des Moines metro without power for a little more than an hour.

Thunderstorms began in Des Moines around 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, with showers and thunderstorms expected heading into the night and into the early morning Thursday.

How many MidAmerican power outages were reported?

MidAmerican Energy reported 8,706 customers in the Des Moines area are without power as of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

By 3:45 p.m., all but seven customers had been restored.

What caused MidAmerican power outages in Des Moines?

Thunderstorms are believed to have damaged equipment at downtown Des Moines substation, said Geoff Greenwood, MidAmerican Energy’s media relations manger.

When will MidAmerican power outages be resolved?

MidAmerican crews were working to assess and repaid the damaged components. Crews were able to reroute circuits in an effort to restore service to most customers while repairs continue, Greenwood said.
