UH student recovers after devastating pedestrian accident, highlighting need for safety awareness

HOUSTON — A 19-year-old University of Houston student is back on campus after a nearly two-year recovery from severe injuries sustained when she was struck by an SUV traveling approximately 30 miles per hour while crossing in a marked crosswalk on October 6, 2023.

Anam Sorathia suffered multiple fractures including a broken humerus, pelvis fractures, knee injuries, and extensive soft tissue damage when the vehicle hit her just steps from safety. The kinesiology major was forced to drop out that semester and spent two months in a wheelchair.

“So I broke my humerus, which is a bone in my upper arm, and then I broke my pelvis. I had a couple fractures in both my knees,” Sorathia explained. “And then I had obviously a bunch of, like, soft tissue damage, like, road rash, everything all over my legs. And, I broke my glasses on the road, too.”…
