Naperville, IL – City officials are addressing community concerns after reports of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in Naperville this week. The Naperville Police Department (NPD) issued a statement clarifying that, under Illinois law, local police are not involved in federal immigration enforcement.
According to the Illinois Attorney General’s office, the Illinois TRUST Act prohibits local law enforcement from assisting in civil immigration enforcement actions. That means NPD officers cannot detain individuals based solely on immigration status, nor can they notify or transfer people to ICE custody unless required by a federal criminal warrant.
“The Naperville Police Department, by law, cannot assist with immigration enforcement activity and does not receive notification when ICE officers are going to be in Naperville,” officials wrote in a public statement.
