Tensions Rise as Russian Jets Breach Estonian Airspace
Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace on Friday, marking an unprecedented escalation in regional tensions. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna condemned the incursion as “unprecedentedly brazen” and called for increased political and economic pressure on Russia. This incident marks the fourth violation of Estonian airspace by Russia this year.
Two NATO sources confirmed the jets flew together for over 12 minutes before being intercepted and escorted out by Italian F-35s. While initial reports suggested the Russian aircraft might have been carrying Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, this has not been confirmed.
The incident follows a similar episode earlier this week where Poland accused Russia of sending numerous drones into its airspace from Belarus and Ukraine. Poland responded by shooting down several drones and initiating Article 4 consultations with NATO allies.
Estonia is now also considering invoking Article 4, which allows member states to request consultations if they believe their territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened. While Article 4 doesn’t automatically trigger a military response like Article 5, it serves as a significant diplomatic and security warning.
